Very mediocre.

The first impression I got from the film was positive. I don't know Kevin Bacon that well anymore and I don't exactly see him appearing in the biggest films of today. Still, an actor like that has to make a living, and apparently They/Them was the answer for that. A good choice?

For the money maybe, but I can't imagine a movie like this paying off so well. In any case, it must be some kind of direct response to the hype of today's youth cultures. The title should at least make that clear, but then the film is never sharp or satire. Especially a somewhat bland adaptation of a psychological horror film with some slasher elements in the long run.

In the end, the film still goes in a certain direction that could have been potentially good, but if it can really respond well to that, the helm is already turned and we mainly look at a tame slasher film. A slasher film that is constantly shot in dark environments, so we can hardly see anything of these tame murders.

It still has a number of special moments and certainly the sometimes peculiar motives from the characters such as Bacon's charm still provide miracles. Not very effective miracles alone, because otherwise the film mainly remains stuck on the average line. A line that never gets very interesting unfortunately, but oh well. Despite the hype, it's still fun to watch.

A group of young people come to Whistler Camp (which not coincidentally resembles Camp Crystal Lake) where camp leader Owen Whistler [Kevin Bacon] with the help of wife Cora [Carrie Preston], a therapist, and nurse Molly [Ana Chlumsky], among others. tries to help the young people with the 'search' for their identity. None of the young people is heterosexual and quite a few don't mind at all, but Owen hopes to get them on the 'right' path. Initially, the mood among young people is not so bad, but there is a masked killer on the loose. Hybrid of social drama, romance and horror doesn't fully come into its own, but Logan's attempt to expose the divisions in the LGBTQ+ community in the form of a thriller is commendable and quite entertaining.
