I knew Martin Eden (Film, 2019) from the director and just like with that film I can't do much with the story: the director apparently can't tell a story very well. That is somewhat compensated by atmosphere and pleasant images and music: the film is slow in a soothing way, as life in that time, the interbellum, must also have been slow and in that sense not very rushed. As said, the story is (again) a bit vague or muddled so that I don't really know what the director wants to say. Possibly the film is about how the early 20th century forms the transition from old magic (fairy tales) to modern magic (aircraft and other modern technology), but that the magic will always remain when dreams become reality as in love. Or something.

I also only saw Martin Eden from this director. This movie was also not 100%. I don't quite know what to do with it. A somewhat coming of age story of a girl who grows up in a time of many technical inventions. From a man, her father, who literally left WWI behind and in whom no one is interested. Life just goes on. There is no point looking back and he takes this to heart by taking his daughter's upbringing to heart.

Quite atmospheric at times and the film has a magical touch, although I was not completely moved by it. In terms of content, I may have been a bit hungry.

Raphaël [Raphaël Thiéry] returns to his hometown after the First World War. His wife died shortly after Juliette gave birth and Raphaël finds shelter with Madame Adeline [Noémie Lvovsky], who took care of Juliette. There's a chronic lack of story and a vague side plot involving magic and a mage [Yolande Moreau] and the entry of adventurer Jean [Louis Garrel] doesn't improve that. But Thiéry is completely convincing as the devoted father and woodcarver and Marco Garziaplena portrays the adult Juliette [Juliette Jouan] beautifully, so that at least something of a fairytale atmosphere is created. But atmosphere without substance is not enough.
