The famous composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky died on November 6, 1893, shortly after the premiere of his sixth symphony, also known as 'The Pathétique'. The funeral of this legendary Russian composer is disrupted by the presence of his wife Antonina [Alyona Mikhailova]. In messy structured flashbacks we discover why her presence at Tchaikovsky's funeral is by no means self-evident. Beautifully filmed by Vladislav Opelyants and fully acted, but Serebrennikov, who is also responsible for the screenplay, does not make it clear for a moment why Antonina clings obsessively to her homosexual husband. The sympathy therefore goes more to Pyotr than to his stalker wife and that cannot have been the intention.

Superbly acted, sublimely dressed and beautifully lit, but also extremely suffocating in a way that put me at a distance without wanting to: it was difficult for me to empathize or put myself in the shoes of the title character, which is why I thought it also impossible to sympathize with her. The composer plays open cards with her without apparently realizing that this is the stupidest thing he could have done under the circumstances, because Antonina Miliukova is determinedly hard-teaching and cannot accept the conditions he has set in the long run, with all the consequences that entails. The ensuing misery is compellingly portrayed but unpleasant to follow, so that afterwards I was left with the question why this film was actually made: to highlight one specific medical history, or as a portrait of the more general phenomenon of obsession? Perhaps not the right question to ask when a movie should really take you away.

Serebrennikov will not ring a bell with the general public. I don't think he is a much-watched director in the arthouse world either. There are ten of his films here on MM, but they have not been widely viewed. For me, my third of his and certainly his best.

Beautiful penetrating portrait of Tchaikovsky's marriage. One that was doomed to failure even before it started. Not that he could hide chairs or sofas. He already warned his fiancée what kind of person he was. What follows is a downward spiral of self-destruction for both ultimately.

Beautiful decoration, great lighting with many dark shadows. Nice acting with excellent dialogues. Definitely recommended for enthusiasts.
