All That Breathes plot

In one of the most populous cities in the world, cows, rats, monkeys, frogs and boars live side by side with people. Here two brothers fall in love with a bird - the black hawk. From their makeshift bird hospital in their tiny basement, the brothers care for thousands of these enchanting creatures that fall daily from the smog-choked air of New Delhi. As environmental pollution and civil unrest escalate, the relationship between this Muslim family and the neglected bird forms a poetic chronicle of the city's collapsing ecology and rising social tensions.

Apparently an award winner, this somewhat unbalanced documentary that artificially links religion to social unrest. I'm afraid the competing documentaries weren't that great, because this documentary is nice, not spectacular and certainly not a winner, as far as I'm concerned.

Strongly disagree. I thought it was very good and very coherent. The social disturbances were, as is often the case in India, religious. That's not something that links the documentary. That's just how it is.

Very nice documentary that advocates solidarity with "all that breathes" and that is the essence. The brothers who dedicate their lives to saving birds in an environment that is highly stressed by human interaction, which led to a wave of violence when the film was made. And another layer around that is the same religious contradiction that has led to a decades-long cold war between India and Pakistan. In that context, saving birds seems meaningless, but this film turns it into a hopeful look at how it can be done.

In addition, the film looks unemphatically beautiful. With a nice view of the ecosystem in the beginning and beautiful camera work on several occasions.

I don't see enough documentaries in the cinema.

Born and raised in Delhi, Salik, Mohammed and Nadeem own a soap dish manufacturing company. Their true passion, however, is taking care of birds (and kites in particular) that, like many other animals, are trying to adapt to life in a big city. This teaches them to look respectfully at 'Alles wat Ademt' (no reference to Rob de Nijs). This documentary follows these men as they try to raise the finances and facilities for a bird clinic. Beautifully filmed and full of interesting visual ideas, Sen raises relevant questions with this documentary about the harmony between man and duration, between city and nature and the consequences of climate change. Episodic, but entertaining.
