I'll admit that the dryly humorous tone of Bob's Burgers doesn't appeal to me and I've only seen a few minutes of it. But this feature-length film version adds very little to the series anyway, unless you absolutely swoon over the musical interludes. In my case, that wasn't the case. Bob [H. Jon Benjamin] and Linda [John Roberts] are on the verge of losing their hamburger restaurant when the bank withdraws financial support. The restaurant can only be saved if they significantly increase their turnover in seven days, or if they drastically cut costs. A crack in the ground in front of Bob's Burgers makes Plan A all but impossible, so Louise [Kristen Schaal], Gene [Eugen Mirman], and Tina [Dan Mintz] try to get their landlord, Calvin Fischoeder [Kevin Kline], acquitted of a murder that took place six years earlier. Loose ideas, little coherence, but those who enjoy the series' deadpan humor will surely find it entertaining. However, I doubt the series will win new fans this way.

Annoying.

I'd seen a bit of the series before, but it didn't really appeal to me even then. Still, a film adaptation can bring some changes, as the creators are often forced to go a bit bigger. This film does have a fairly broad scope, but that's about it.

The first half of the film features some uplifting, dry jokes that still manage to hit the mark. Moreover, the animation techniques are quite up-to-date, and the film moves along smoothly. The filmmakers choose to maintain a fast pace, and despite my limited knowledge of the series' plot, I was able to keep up easily. I don't think you need to be a huge fan of that either.

What I don't like as much are the characters themselves. They're either made into rather random, emotionless characters or hyperactive, silly ones. The problem is that no matter what the film tries, it just doesn't work. Everyone is unfunny in their own way, and Linda Belcher was especially unbearable. It's enjoyable if you enjoy it; I find it mostly lame without any real impact.

The progression is decent enough, but the finale is unremarkable, and the other tactics that drive the family members into even greater trouble feel uncreative. It's actually remarkable how a film with so much freedom can turn out so tamely. Bob's Burgers is a bit of a perfect child among its foul-mouthed competitors. It's precisely this that makes a film like this simply not work.

I'm not familiar with the series. It's an animated film aimed at adults. I didn't think the film was bad per se, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. I appreciated the humor (dry, cynical humor), but the film simply failed to engage me emotionally. I just stood there and watched. The characters remained at a distance. The story itself isn't very compelling, and I could only partially follow it (partly due to the incredibly fast speed). Even if you watch with subtitles, you really have to follow the English, because more than half of the film is puns that lose some of their charm when translated. I give it two stars, but I can easily imagine a fan of this type of animation giving it three stars or more.
