A wish for freedom between oppressive traditions and occupation. Or like 'Farha' (2021) cleverly visualizes the female perspective of a Palestinian girl who is stuck in her own position. First when Farah (Karam Tahar) expresses his heart's desire not to get married at a young age, but to be allowed to study in the big city. Oppressive images of a traditional living environment in which the young girl is always kept out of conversations that concern her own future. But her father is not the worst and decides to send his daughter with her uncle anyway. You can't temper such a free spirit! Then Farha's dream seems to have ended when Israeli planes bomb the village and the girl is locked up in a storehouse. From one moment to the next, her dream of freedom and independence becomes a bitter struggle for survival.

It is clear that 'Farha' (2021) does not have the budget of mega productions. Especially during the bombings, it becomes painfully clear that much of the trouble takes place on the soundtrack to reduce costs. Nevertheless, this minimal approach also fits the perspective of a young girl who does not understand what is happening around her. Once locked in the storehouse, the film becomes oppressively claustrophobic when you realize that this girl really has nowhere to go. From her plight, Farha sees that the abstract threat of bombing becomes increasingly concrete when ground troops enter the conflict. Until the violence takes hold in such a way that she can no longer look away from the injustice done to the Palestinians. It makes 'Farha' (2021) a penetrating hammer blow about voices that are heard just a little too little when it comes to this conflict.

My introduction to a film from Jordan tells the shocking story about the Nakba (“The Catastrophe”) in 1948 when Palestinians were driven from their homes en masse for the Israelis. Especially given the powerful images of a Palestinian family (including a newborn baby), it is not surprising that the Israeli authorities tried to stop the screening of this film.

The inexperienced Karam Taher delivers a remarkable title role as the teenager, whose dream of a bright future is rudely interrupted by the arrival of Israeli militias. Judging from today's news reports, it seems to me that there is a Nakba 2.0 going on right now.

The director makes a mess of it. The Haganah doing the dirty work of the Irgun militias? You just have to dare. Propaganda and falsification of history. Not badly executed, but what good is that?
