Amid the coup d'état in Guinea-Bissau in 2003, three hitmen are on a mission. They have to take a drug dealer to Dakar in Senegal. Their plan does not go smoothly and they find themselves trapped in a mysterious river delta where they try to stay under the radar at a campsite. Not easy with the presence of a chief on the one hand and a mysterious, deaf woman on the other.

Intriguing but unfortunately also quite boring and ultimately unsatisfactory mix of war drama and horror. Well played and beautifully portrayed, partly thanks to the beautiful desolate locations in Senegal and Gambia, but the plot is too casual and the characters barely know how to captivate. Lots of atmosphere and excellent special effects, though.

A horror from Senegal, you don't come across that very often. And judging by the reviews, it's not an amateurish piece of work either. Come on!

I had a great time with Saloum, but it's not a top film either. We see three gangsters who, on a mission to extract a Mexican drug lord from Guinea-Bissau, end up in a village in the remote Saloum Delta. A remote area full of mangroves, rivers, islands - and also hosts who don't trust the new guests and vice versa, and on top of that some local legends that I couldn't quite follow but add to the threat. Anyway, I'm a sucker for films that are set in areas/cultures that I'm not that familiar with, so Saloum scores big on that alone. Beautiful images of West Africa, river deltas and a kind of hospitality that radiates mistrust.

The film is also mostly decent. It looks pretty good, the acting is good too, and the movie keeps a decent pace. But Saloum works more as a thriller about crooks on the run than as a supernatural horror that, to be honest, I also lost the thread a bit. I was also a bit confused about the link between some villagers and the local evil. But it was still a fine folk horror with pretty nice special effects, despite my state of confusion. I round it up.

Mercenaries Chaka [Yann Gael], Rafa [Roger Sallah] and Minuit [Mentor Ba] flee to the village of Saloum in Senegal after a mission that didn't go quite as planned, hoping to hide there. There they are kindly received by Omar [Bruno Henry], but a young, deaf woman [Evelyne Ily Juhen] soon realizes who they are and threatens to betray them if she is not allowed to join them. The situation becomes even more dire when it turns out that the inhabitants of Saloum are plagued by an ancient curse that can also kill Chaka, Raf and Minuit. Unconventional Senegalese mix of action thriller and horror works thanks to the convincing cast, dynamic direction and an effective soundtrack.
