Wilder Planet: Gefahr für Lissabon plot

Modern science is still investigating exactly how tsunamis form and wreak additional havoc on the cities they hit. A fascinating case for reconstruction purposes is the destruction of the Portuguese capital Lisbon on November 1, 1755. The tsunami killed a fifth of the population. King Joseph's prime minister, Marquis Pombal, took charge of the rescue and reconstruction. Minor seismic activity and religious fanatics continued to complicate life. This made Pombal the real, absolutist ruler, who finally modernized Portugal.
