'A Journal for Jordan' follows the life of Sergeant Charles Monroe King. As a soldier stationed in Iraq, he decides to keep a diary for his son. In it he tries to give him good advice on how to grow up without the presence of his father.

As part of his project and to pay his respects to men and women of the armed forces, Denzel Washington visited Fort Irwin in California in September 2020 for a meet-and-greet with soldiers and families. For Washington, this was the first time he directed a film in which he does not appear. For Jalon Christian, this was his first directing session ever with Washington. The actor received his first NAACP nomination for his role as Jordan. Annabel O'Hagan made her acting debut with this film.
The story was too jumpy at times, and ultimately too long-winded. In addition, it was all just a bit too good to give this film a pass. The acting still provides a reasonable result.
