Long before it is revealed, it is already clear how the connections between the main characters work. Then we have to wait anxiously for the denouement. But that is a bit disappointing. Instead of a brilliant solution to the complicated relationships, the story has a dull, meaningless ending (a kind of deus-ex-machina), which causes the film to fizzle out. Really a letdown at the end. It's a good thing that Julie Delpy in particular managed to entertain me quite nicely in the previous hour and a half.

An almost kitschy and sentimental adaptation of Max Frisch's novel of the same name, that much is certain. However, Volker Schlöndorff initially manages to succinctly characterize the character of Walter Faber, as an engineer who does not read fiction, does not dream and prefers work to human relationships. It is not bad how Sam Shepard portrays this technician, who is devoid of empathy, as a dozing soul, who gradually awakens from the emptiness of his existence through chance encounters.

As soon as Julie Delpy appears on the scene, this film adaptation slides towards a clichéd romantic soap, with quite a bit of attention paid to the actress's apparently still budding bosom. Well! Having said this (and shown), the film progresses steadily towards its denouement, in which all chemistry seems to die a silent death, and in particular the artificial-Oedipal of Frisch's narrative catches the eye, without its dramatic potential becoming real. becomes palpable.

At the end, Schlöndorff does well to retranslate the bizarre original into a mainstream highlight: 'Homo faber' becomes more comprehensible, although the eighties-esque soundtrack and the very sweet cinematography are not exactly will stay with you. So very mediocre. Or worse than mediocre, to be honest.

2.25*
