Better than expected.

With a title like Behemoth you wouldn't think the film would get much further than a simple event with terrible acting. Actually both examples are true, but still a pretty reasonable result comes out. A result that only really manages to shoot forward in terms of level from the middle part.

The first half is mainly about thriller and crime, but in the end the mysterious plot elements dominate. The acting is way below par. And I mean seriously way below par. Especially Eisenberg doesn't do a thing. That attempt to cry seemed like a waste of time. It was like we were out for a day at the asylum. The other characters are mainly cliché and boring.

In the second half, director Szewczyk chooses to pull out all the stops and make the turn to horror. At first, this is a bit difficult because Statman's appearance feels very stagey, but then the gore kicks in hard and we suddenly get going. Then there is a film with excellent pace, innovative colors and above all a brutal look.

It's nice that the film ultimately opts for practical effects instead of throwing yet another clumsy CGI at it. Behemoth gets far mainly because it can do something in the area of horror and gore, with some wild use of the camera and a lot of audio noise. Unfortunately, it is slowed down by a somewhat backward first half and especially bad acting. The outcome is not entirely satisfactory, but oh well. I was already happy that it was not yet another pile of weeds.

What a shame this film. The cinematography is beautiful, dark and atmospheric without becoming too dark. The plot is also okay, but the dialogues are crap and the real horror here is in the acting. My god, how bad. Laughable even. The CGI and special effects are often not worth writing home about. Such a shame, because with a better execution this could be a really cool horror.

2* for the effort and because I wasn't really bored
