As one of the few, the imprisonment of homosexuals continued after the liberation. Referring to paragraph 175 in the code, homosexuality was a criminal offense and should be punished with imprisonment. Well, this was not only the case in Germany, of course. The paragraph was not removed from the criminal code until 1995…

In a poignant portrait we follow Hans who has been imprisoned for several years. He undergoes his trial and imprisonment. What else should he do? His unwanted love just makes him who he is. As long as there is no understanding from the outside, he must submit to his fate.

Sebastián Meise brings a sober portrait of homosexuality within the prison walls. Sober, but effective, stretched out over various time periods. Excellent role by the German actor Franz Rogowski, who creates a subdued, but intense portrait with his character head. The dialogues are sparse, but the camera work is solid. Great movie!

Sensual, raw and raw, but also captivating, this film introduces us to a section of German criminal law that persecutes the gay community and deprives it of its freedom.

Disconcerting that its concrete application, eagerly introduced by the Nazis, was continued just as intensively by liberated Germany, in the sense that prisoners from the concentration camps had to be taken back into custody immediately.

This is how Hans experiences, whose story is told in three consecutive periods. He has grown up with the scary prison life and with undergoing the hard laws, but friendship and love he has in abundance.

Director Meise spices up his sober film with strong to moving scenes and can count on a brilliant Franz Rogowski with an equally sublime George Friedrich in his wake.

Very nice prison film and certainly not an ordinary one.

A homage to a man who stands out for what he is and never denies these feelings.

It was not until 1994 that paragraph 175 was deleted...

A harrowing story about the application of article 175 in the penal code of the former West Germany. The movie is shown in a non-chronological order. Although there is a message with every time jump and the actors are clearly younger / older, you have to be attentive to follow the full picture. Another downside is that there are repetitive scenes (such as the punishments in the solitary cell, the undressing, the water spray) which makes the movie a bit long-winded.
