Best of the series, based on a manga series. I have seen the three previous films and I did not find them that memorable. Often a lot of nonsense and I can remember little of it with the best will in the world.
This 'finale' has some back-up characters from the previous films, but that's about it, because this film can easily be viewed as a standalone. What happened to Tomoe and why Enishi is consumed by feelings of revenge against Kenshin is told in flashback.
Simple revenge films are often the best. You can often attach deeper dramatic layers to them. "Final" is above all a strongly directed film, with beautiful visuals, successful action scenes and a story rhythm that is better balanced than its predecessors. This was a very successful film.
