Saw it tonight at my regular cinema, so I'll be the first to say something about it. I don't recommend it with the utmost enthusiasm, but I recommend it to try. I myself could find good entertainment in it, but the problem with this King adaptation is its screenplay. It is aware of its potential, yet it only achieves its full potential to a very limited extent. It has a great production design, fairly immersive camera work and an insanely good John Carpenter soundtrack. Yet the most important elements such as character development remain very safe, aloof and that's not how it comes into its own. It's a shame because the main characters had a nice chemistry, especially the girl and Zack Efron. The intensity of his antagonists is very below par, as is his action.

It's hard to rate this film on a first viewing. The pace and playing time feel quite fast in the first half, and very slow in the second half. After It: Chapter One (2017), Stephen King has no positive streak. This isn't the best, but it's not completely crap either. The film just makes it very difficult for itself narratively. I'd recommend just watching it to make up your own mind. He gets a maybe moderate 6.5/10 from me.

Firestarter is already the second film adaptation of this Stephen King story and I don't really understand why this is coming out in this form. Also because the first part is not exactly known as a classic.

I do follow little 2 in his comment. This is a film that has a lot of potential and the fast pacing has made it a very entertaining film. Only the universe that is created feels much bigger and in the movie you really only get a small fraction of it. The film blows through the plot and everywhere you think. I want to know more about this. Why exactly is this organization evil? Why are those tests performed? What is the goal? And on a personal level you also want to know more about the entire background story of the fleeing Effron and Lemmon. Except for some fragments you don't really feel the need for their flight.

You can of course fill in all this yourself and it is not difficult to think of. But the fact that the film itself does not put time and attention into this is a big loss.

Firestarter cries out for a series and a more in-depth story, but it just keeps bubbling to that surface and it doesn't go much deeper in this film. And that's a shame, because that curiosity is well aroused and you really want to delve into that world. It's a pity that nowadays people don't have that urge to make miniseries of King's stories. That was different in the 90s when all mediocre miniseries were made. And especially now with higher production values, far too big stories with potential are crammed into an hour and a half (Dark Tower, Firestarter etc.).

And oh yes, Carpenter's soundtrack is phenomenal. He really doesn't do this enough these days.

3.0*

I read the book once when I was a kid. Didn't know much about story but do know that book is much better than this movie. It all comes across as a bit superficial and emotionless. Didn't feel like anything in the story. Was expecting more from the trailer. Also because Zac Efron plays a big role here. But he couldn't save the film either. There could have been more, but this one just wasn't. Missed opportunity. Regrettably…
