Italy, 1900. When the local pastor refuses to baptize and name Agata's stillborn daughter [Celeste Cescutti], Agata leaves her island for a journey on foot to northern Italy where a church community is said to give life to her child for a short time. awake so that it can still be baptized. On the way, she meets Lynx [Ondina Quadri], who promises to help her achieve her goal. The first half hour is full of lengthy, pointless shots and is horribly slow. Then it suddenly gets going (and that's the only reason why this doesn't get the lowest possible rating) but unfortunately it soon gets bogged down again in an excruciatingly slow dragging nothingness. A filmmaker with a bit of common sense could have easily done this in half the time.

Interesting topic about a stillbirth in ultra-conservative and religious Italy around 1900. At that time it was still medieval dogma to write stillborns who could not be baptized to limbo (not to be confused with purgatory). The condition of these children, and all persons of a similar status, residing in the prehell, was thought to be a state of natural happiness, undisturbed by any sorrow for the loss of heavenly glory.

I thought the effect itself was mediocre. The location is very desolate and shabby. Although the vegetation changes somewhat during the trek, this continues throughout the film. It also sets the tone of the film: depressing and not very hopeful. Not the association you would make with Italy.

The pace is slow with long shots with little dialogue. Repetitive too. Still, the film remains entertaining and, with its limited running time, just fine not to slide off. Interesting was the passage about the idea of the minuses, because yes, Agata obviously produces milk.

Perhaps there could have been a little more panache in the film. Cinematography OK, especially the beautiful shots at the end in the lake. Hovering between 3.0* and 3.5*.

Much more than the sad story in itself, this directorial debut by Laura Samani is particularly impressive due to the beautiful camera work in the spectacular surroundings of the border area between Italy and Slovenia. The ending was not for me.
