Difficult character to like, of course, which makes the film uncomfortable at times. Platt can certainly sing, but he's just too old now and that really works against this film. Furthermore, the cast is just nice and Dever steals the show again. What a talent that is.

Nice film about a teenage boy who has no friends and has difficulty making contact. A musical about depression and suicide. Not everything works well here, but there are certainly some good scenes and the songs have the right impact. A fine cast and Ben Platt plays the title role with full dedication. The film goes on a bit too long for 3.5 stars.

Dear Evan Hansen is based on a successful musical, but the film adaptation was subsequently overloaded with criticism. However, it is personally a mystery to me why the source material was still so well received, because the content of this story is really too shocking for words. It concerns the character of Ben Platt (who does a very good job despite his age) who gets himself into deep trouble with a completely ridiculous decision. Despite the fact that those around him are in increasing pain, it takes an awfully long time before he begins to seriously realize his mistake, making it impossible for the viewer to feel any sympathy for him. The supporting roles played by Kaitlyn Dever, Julianne Moore and Amy Smart are meritorious, but the eventual translation from musical to live-action raises eyebrows. Serious moments are interrupted by sentimental numbers that never fall into place, ultimately only adding to the disgust for the event. Some musical tunes in the beginning thunder along nicely, the acting is above average and director Stephen Chbosky does what he can with this almost impossible material, but Dear Evan Hansen is a most remarkable affair.
