Reasonable film about a woman with psychological problems who is pregnant for the second time. A film about life after a attempted suicide. How the people around her deal with this, make for some good scenes. Amanda Seyfried plays a good role here. However, the film does not run smoothly everywhere, also because the timeline is not always clear.

A beautiful honest treatment of a difficult subject. Beautifully played by a great cast with Seyfried as a well-known figurehead. But beware, it is not a happy film, the warning you read in advance is absolutely justified.

Afterwards I wonder a bit who this movie is for exactly. Not for the people who suffer from this or a similar form of depression themselves, I think, because they already know how it works. And maybe not for their family either, because you don't get a better or deeper insight into the how and why, nor do you get handles or help on how to deal with it. It just remains a very annoying and nasty disease - but even that message is not really clear, that it is a disease, not just something that someone can do something about themselves.

I'm not sure if I would recommend this movie to anyone. Maybe it's better to go for a brisk walk or do a puzzle. Only if you are a convinced fan of Seyfried, then maybe.

In 1995, postpartum depression was rarely talked about and largely undiagnosed. Since then, one in five mothers suffers from postpartum depression, but many are still ashamed to talk about it. Postpartum depression is treatable.

This text is of crucial importance to many mothers who, like the character Julie, struggle with this form of depression. It not only affects their own lives, but also their husbands, children and relatives are confronted with it. They are often powerless, creating unnecessary feelings of guilt. This film gives a realistic view of reality, and largely contains a dark atmosphere. However, the role of Julie's father remains a mystery. Through flashbacks, we see that Julie faced physical violence in the past. Later, the film includes a scene between Julie and her father, which implies that Julie may have been sexually assaulted at a young age. This while her father expresses his regret in a rather awkward way. The film is an emotional rollercoaster, and certainly not one for a pleasant evening. I could identify well with the character Julie, but also with her husband Ethan Davis. Heavy stuff for viewers who can identify all too well with these characters.

2.5 *
