My first film experience with Albert Brooks and it immediately left me wanting more.

At first glance I expected a rather bland film, but it turned out to be quite okay.

The comedy part was nicely interspersed with some light drama, which made the characters feel real without it feeling forced.

At times it reminded me a little bit of Woody Allen, but Albert Brooks is certainly not a carbon copy of him.

I found it a pleasant seat.

I miss a bit of comedy...

As a Brooks fan, with a film of his in my top 10, I was disappointed with Lost in America. The premise is fine. The characters too. A dissatisfied yuppie couple from LA decides to take a long sabbatical to ponder the meaning of life. They buy a campervan and travel across America. Unfortunately, their first stop is Las Vegas, where the clueless woman gambles away their entire fortune. Destitute and dejected, they are forced to take menial jobs in a sleepy desert town.

So far, so good, except the film is already well past its halfway point. While I was expecting a situation comedy/road movie, Brooks takes a much more philosophically moralistic tack. He spends a considerable amount of time building up to make it clear that they're essentially a spoiled couple with nothing to complain about. That could have been done in five minutes. Then, an endless argument ensues after they lose their money. Now I really wondered when the film would actually begin.

In the end, there was only half an hour left, during which two scenes reveal that their menial jobs and impoverished existence doesn't bring happiness after all. Brooks and his wife can't wait to get back to their old yuppie lifestyle. After all, they've only been gone a month. Brooks concludes: If you're rich and unhappy, you won't find happiness in a simpler existence. However boring your rich life is, enjoy it, because a poor person has no choice at all. Depressing, indeed.

You have to love that talkative Albert Brooks humor.
At first, I had a bit of a hard time getting into the long dialogues, but once the couple gives up everything and hits the road in their camper, the film improves considerably. The situation surrounding the woman's gambling addiction in the casino was the best, in my opinion. A bit weak at times, but the film does convey the down-to-earth message that the grass isn't always greener elsewhere, and it doesn't take the couple long to realize that. I'm never going to be thrilled with the film, but with a bit of perseverance, I found it to be a reasonably digestible mid-range film.
