Theater teacher Benjamin Boltanski [Benoît Magimel] has cancer that has progressed so far that he can no longer be saved. With his well-meaning but smothering mother [Catherine Deneuve], he tries to prepare for the inevitable. In the first hour, Bercot sketches an ideal picture of the care system in which the nursing staff, led by the genuinely involved Dr. Eddé [Gabriel Sara], take all the time and space to take care of their patients and keep up morale by singing Lean On Me together. But Benjamin's death is completely milked out and Bercot overwhelms you with so many visual clichés that the ending is a huge relief. And that is not a recommendation.

It is undoubtedly all well-intentioned, but this film about palliative care does not come across as credible. The melodramatic ending doesn't do the film any good either. The role of Cécile de France in particular is cringeworthy, while Catherine Deneuve seems to have turned on autopilot. The film misses the mark in several respects.

A fairly standard drama that I could have done a bit more with than the others here, but it never became anything special. A drama on autopilot about a young man diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I thought Gabriel Sara played a nice and energetic role as a doctor, but to conclude that this is how it all works, hmm a bridge too far I think. Deneuve, a great lady in the French film world, did it more on experience, without a doubt. Magimel did a decent job as a patient. De France's role was also very poor all in all. Not a film that stands out above the crowd and depends too much on cheap sentiment rather than on a profound drama.
