Nice film about a brand new father who has to raise his daughter alone after the mother dies. Not exactly the most original story and also quite clichéd, but the film looks away easily (one with a smile and a tear). Kevin Hart does not do without merit in a dramatic role and is in any case not annoying.

Faint.

I have to say that Kevin Hart is still quite okay in this somewhat moderate role: no endless shouting or fussing. He can be a little more subdued for once and he is still doing quite well.

It's just a shame for him that it has to be in a rather soggy and cliché drama. A cartload of nuances is missing. Furthermore, the list of mandatory numbers is systematically ticked off, which also makes this feel routine.

Immediately after Liz [Deborah Ayorinde] gave birth to a daughter, she passed away due to an unforeseen complication and her husband Matt [Kevin Hart] was left alone. Overcome with grief and doubting his fitness to parent, Matt tries to make the best of it. Hart can definitely play more than comedic roles, but he's unsuitable for this story because there are too many moments where you waver between a chuckle and a lump in your throat. The story is also so predictable and sentimental, and the moments between Hart and Melody Hurd (as the growing daughter) so forced cute, that it never convinces anyway.
