Nice.

This is not half Dog Bite Dog, but double Dog Bite Dog. Not just an ordinary return to form for Cheang, who has mainly lost himself in mediocre blockbusters over the last 10 years, but a new standard for a genre that could use a fresh boost.

The visuals especially know how to attract attention. Sharp, high contrast b&w (with a fine bluish cast), but also extremely detailed, so you hardly know where to look first. But the acting is also very strong, and the soundtrack (thanks to Kenji Kawai) is much better than you would expect from a HK film.

It is a pity that China's grip has only become tighter in recent years, the chance that these types of films will be made in HK in the future has become very small, but at least Cheang has quickly made his mark printed. Wonderful movie.

4.5* and a extensive review

Beautiful black and white film with breathtaking images at times. It is a feast for the eyes, and fortunately the film draws on its great visuals because the script is poor, the dialogues are too thin, meaning the characters lack depth... but actually that doesn't even bother them because their questionable morals and actions are highlighted. As a serial killer film, it lacked the necessary tension. On the other hand, it has been a long time since a very grim and nasty serial killer film was seen. The film takes place in the underbelly of the city, among garbage, rubbish and slums, which of course adds even more darkness. Also a very brutal film in which a young woman is constantly abused. This should be seen here as a penance for the collision of the cop's wife. I thought it was worth it, even slightly better than Dog bites Dog (3*).

A film to see twice.

To start with the most striking thing, visually it is so slick and beautiful, but there are also so many details to see that it is difficult to record everything in one go. But I also found the story a bit difficult to follow, if you don't pay attention - distracted by the next beautiful shot - then you have already missed something. During the second round a lot more fell into place. Could just be me, I often find Asian films a bit difficult to follow.

In retrospect it is actually not that complicated - the film actually follows the pattern of a standard police film, including the frame story that is so often used in it. But at the same time also a motive of guilt and revenge, of bizarre things such as acrotomophilia, and a detective who recognizes the perpetrator by his smell. Oh yeah, and a toothache on your wisdom tooth. Enough to keep you busy with all the details a second time, and what I already started with - it really is no punishment to see the images again. Or even three times.
