Entertaining documentary about the largest art fraud case in American history, in which both the guilty parties and the victims have their say. Smoothly put together and presented with a good dose of humor, although the case certainly has a number of poignant aspects. Ultimately perhaps a bit too limited in subject and approach to keep the full hour and a half interesting, but largely worth it.

Art dealer Ann Freedman had worked for more than 30 years at the renowned Knoedler Gallery in New York City when it was discovered that in 10 years she had sold some 60 forgeries of famous abstract expressionists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning for a total of approximately $ 80 million. It resulted in a number of legal proceedings that ended with a settlement before the making of this documentary. Journalists and victims regard Freedman as a fraud or incredibly naive, even though the works had been authenticated by many prominent art experts. The fact that both sides participated in a bitter struggle on this documentary gives it credibility and depth. Emotions run high, but Avrich never loses sight of the most important question: was this an isolated incident, or is the art trade littered with forgeries that have simply not yet been exposed as such? The story of Pei-Shen Qian provides a hint. Definitely also worth it for those who know little about art.
