In April 1941, the Germans and Italians took advantage of the discontent of Croats in Yugoslavia to hand over Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and parts of Dalmatia to separatist Ante Pavelić. One of the consequences was that Jasenovac concentration camp was run by Croats. They took the opportunity to eliminate the ethnic Serbs in addition to Jews, Roma and Sinti. This film follows the Serbian Ilic family from the moment they have to walk to Jasenovac. There men are separated from their wives and children. Ten-year-old Dara [Biljana Cekic] takes on more and more responsibilities as the mother figures around her are murdered or “transferred” and shows how she tries to survive, especially to protect her brother Bude. The direction and acting are excellent, even if the screenplay is often a mix of Schindler's List and The Pianist. The biggest shortcoming is the excessive use of swelling strings at the most dramatic moments. That is unnecessary and a bit banal.

Yes, MisterPink, this film eats you up. It either makes you very angry, or sad. Or resigned. In fact, you only watch it to the end because you want to know what happens to the girl Dara and her little brother. The violence and cruelty of the Ustashas is almost unwatchable. But it is a film of course, not a documentary. A well-made film, about an important aspect of history. Whether the film has a propaganda purpose, I will leave undecided. It will not contribute to the reconciliation of Serbs and Croats. The Serbs will have to wait a long time before they are admitted to the EU. Although, Europe is saddened by the growing influence of China in Serbia. The Croats are now the best boy in the class. They even introduced the euro. But don't forget, those Ustashas are still revered as heroes by a section of the population.
