I had a good time with this new MK adaptation. On the one hand I'm happy that the production values are high, with great CGI and cool fights. Sub-Zero and Scorpion are also superbly portrayed in this version and really come into their own with their abilities in combination with the r rating. Every scene in which they appear is great!

That is immediately the side note, because I found the other characters quite mediocre and some even saddening. Especially Raiden, Shang Tsung and Lui Kang were terrible, while these have so much potential. Raiden really is the pinnacle of untapped in this version. He makes a portal here and there and spews out some quasi leading bullshit, but otherwise it really doesn't add anything.

I also have my reservations about the cinematic score. It is of good quality, as everything looks neat, but I really missed the rush I got from that pumping soundtrack from the previous version. An energetic 4-onthefloor beat would have been in order in some places, other than the constant presence of drones, wardums and transformer-backed-glitch SFX. Nicely processed in collaboration with the images and slomos, but not nearly as exciting as in the 1995 version. Too bad.

The pacing had serious problems here and there anyway. Sometimes too long moments of rest and a phase later suddenly 10 men are fighting each other. There could have been a little more balance and structure.

But bottom line, I certainly enjoyed myself with this new version. The fights are as they should be, atmospheric, brutal and violent. Keep the sequel coming and hopefully the weaknesses will be addressed in it to really get to that really great version. The potential is definitely there.

Finally the long-awaited new film adaptation. I've played almost all the games, growing up with the first movie. My expectations were high and after seeing the trailer only higher. I expected a lot more depth and character development. Of course you don't have to with Mortal Kombat but it felt more like an introduction/prologue/long pilot than a movie. But if there is a sequel, it's a good introduction with fun and funny dialogue (especially from Kano), writers and director who stay true to the lore of the games. With delicious fatalities! The protagonist's new character (hopefully not the Alice from future Mortal Kombat movies) was a big disappointment. Came across as boring no charisma, no charisma, thin backstory. MK 21 is in any case a must for the MK enthusiast, but also worth a look if you have not seen the games and the original.

For his genre, this one could handle it. Thin story, but of course this genre doesn't have to have in-depth content. Fight scenes sometimes seemed a bit too made and tame for me. Visually beautiful. Characters from the game are recognizable. Popcorn entertainment without a doubt. Sub-Zero was rendered cool…
