The Execution of Mary, Queen of Scots plot
As a Catholic relative of the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I of England, Mary I of Scotland claimed the English throne. Catholics pinned their hopes on Mary as what they believed to be the rightful heir to the throne and the Scottish Queen thus became a threat to Elizabeth. Maria was finally imprisoned in the remote castle of Fotheringhay. In 1587, her name was mentioned in the Babington conspiracy, a plan to murder Elizabeth and replace Mary so that Catholic faith could be restored in England. Reason for Elizabeth to execute Mary. After a trial she was sentenced to death and beheaded on February 8, 1587. The beheading is reenacted here.
