One Night in Miami... plot

"Four legends. One legendary night."

On February 25, 1964, friends Cassius Clay, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and Malcolm X reunite. They have reason to celebrate as Clay has become World Heavyweight Champion after beating Sonny Liston. However, it will not be a carefree evening for the four famous gentlemen. They are all too aware of the civil rights violation that they and fellow African Americans must tolerate. They share their thoughts and responsibilities on this matter.

Good movie in which Cassius Clay, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and Malcolm X spend an evening together. A fictional event set in the mid-1960s, but with non-fictional characters. The film starts well with the four main characters being introduced separately. Then it drops a bit, until the dialogues between the four slowly become more interesting. Not a bad directorial debut from actress Regina King.

The title refers to the night of February 25-26, 1964 when boxer Cassius Clay [Eli Goree] won his first world title by beating Sonny Liston in Miami. This fictional story brings him together with three other influential black contemporaries: activist Malcolm X [Kingsley Ben-Adir], American football legend (and aspiring actor) Jim Brown [Aldis Hodge] and soul singer Sam Cooke [Leslie Odom Jr.]. In a hotel room, the men criticize each other's role in the fight for equal rights, equal treatment and equality for black Americans. Kemp Powers adapted his own play which offers an interesting perspective on the significance of these men - or what their significance could have been. But neither Powers nor King manages to escape the stage-bound restrictions of the original.

Between a victory rush and a conversion. Or as 'One Night in Miami' (2020) depicts a fictionalized night in which various heroes from the African-American civil rights movement meet. Boxer Cassius Clay (Eli Goree) is not yet Muhammad Ali, but is starting to take an interest in the Islamic beliefs of friend Malcom X. (Kingsley Ben-Adir). The illustrious civil rights activist also invited musician Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) and football player/actor Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) at the same time. It will be an intense evening in which the various celebrities argue with each other about who has the most influence in the African-American resistance. And that while black clouds are gathering around Malcom X, because he sees that an assassination attempt will be made on his life. A modern viewer already knows what place in history these African-American heroes have been given, so also what fate will ultimately befall Malcom.

To be honest, I don't like the predictable goodness of most biographies, but 'One Night in Miami' (2020) manages to avoid known pitfalls with the playful design of a made-up encounter. No jumping back and forth through history to do justice to key moments. No general degeneration history with a sentimental sauce and a flat message. Enough room for nuances, contradictions and the fallible human sides of those portrayed. Just four African-American icons at odds over what their legacy will mean for future generations. The fictional conflict can get really exciting because many of the issues these men address - such as police brutality, representation, and the unsung influence of black culture - are still relevant in the present day. The contemporary urgency gives the viewer the feeling that there is something to be gained or lost in those heated discussions.
