I agree with the movie referenced by Cinzano and mentioning it openly would indeed be a spoiler. Just like his two previous films, this new Plaza also receives a 3*. Decent, but no more than that. He knows how to create a scary and creepy atmosphere, and that is especially evident in the last fifteen minutes with his play of light and darkness. But here and there a genius camera shot comes along, like that many faces of Susana in the shower curtain. Didn't really expect that the grandma was a witch Susana had chosen as a child to transfer her life breath after her death... . Grannies provide pretty scary material. However, the more recent X and the slightly older The Taking of Deborah Logan were more to my taste. Not bad for once.

In the slowburner La Abuela, director Paco Plaza deals with the obsessive urge for youthfulness and the terrifying threat of ageing. He does this with great feeling in a claustrophobic, dark and disturbing atmosphere. The setting is limited. An apartment where an old woman spends her last days. The apartment exudes oppression and evokes a sense of imprisonment.

As in an old-fashioned haunted house movie, the old lady, usually dressed in a white nightgown, glides through the apartment. She suddenly emerges from dark corners or disappears behind doors that close by themselves. Together with idiosyncratic camera settings and a score that creeps in from the background and eventually rises menacingly, a fantastic atmosphere is created. Exciting, dark, ominous.

In addition to the good camera work that often captures feelings of uneasiness and fear in mirror images, it is mainly the two protagonists who have a share in the success of the dirty psychological game that the film plays with the viewer. The old woman is played by Vera Valdez. She plays the lady fragile and decrepit, but sometimes bursts of youthful vigor and elegance break through her character that impress. Opposite her is the beautiful and lively Susana, her granddaughter, who struggles with fragmented memories of her early childhood and suffers from nightmares that sometimes take on a realistic appearance. Almudena Amor brilliantly depicts the upheaval and inner torn apart of her character.

What begins as a film about a sense of duty and caring for a decrepit grandmother gradually turns into a film about a young woman who falls prey to a poisonous terror. La Abuela is fine psychological and atmospheric horror.
