The opening sets the tone. An eight-minute, static long take of the preparation and beginning of a church service, in which the pastor discusses the sacrifice of Abraham, brutally interrupted by an attack with Molotov cocktails that set the church building on fire.

From then on there is a menacing atmosphere in the film that never completely goes away. Kulumbegashvili then needs a close shot (in a bus) of a hand on Yana's backrest, and Yana's neck, to point that out.

Playing dead seems to be a tactic used by certain animals to evade their enemies. In one of the other very remarkable takes in this film, Yana lies on her back in the woods with her eyes closed for several minutes. Perhaps it is also an expression of the will to escape from constant pressure, even a hidden death wish, because Yana's life seems completely caught between a husband who does not give her space and an environment that is very hostile to her and her (Jehovah). -) community state.

Yana teaches the children of the community the fundamentals of religion and prepares them for baptism. In particular, the children are asked to describe heaven and hell.

In three crucial, magnificent, gruesome scenes, Yana's hellish journey is outlined. Her ultimate reaction to this (shown in another very strong sequence) evokes associations with Medea rather than with Abraham. And what about that stunning final take? Another depiction of a hell ride, strongly resonating with the earlier rape scene? Dust art thou...

Slow creeping scenes. Not much depth in the plot either. Of course also depends on the characters; with the pastor's wife in particular, I tended to pull the words out of her.

A film with certainly some very nice scenes, but also a lot of boring, worrying parts that make the film unnecessarily boring. It's a bit like Haneke and Reygadas. I'm quite curious about a next film from this director, but this isn't it yet. And the fact that it is still quite brilliant at times makes it even more frustrating that it does not convince as a whole.
