I had never seen anything from the GDR, so it was about time. Surprisingly enough, it turns out not to be a gray working-class story with a political message, but a colorful romance with lots of flowers and music. They take their time to perform a rock number by the Puhdys and the violin concerto by Beethoven.
Much of the daily life of the Ossis is shown, such as a coffee grinder and a kettle. Old-fashioned tiles hang on the wall, one of which is missing. Old buildings are blown up to replace them with uniform blocks of flats. They drive the glitziest car of all time: the Trabant.
Technically, the DEFA studios were behind, as evidenced by some clumsy action sequences. The dialogues and the dramatic build-up are good. There are happy, but also tragic moments. They were not prude, because there is some nudity in it.
The actors have charisma: Winfried Glatzeder with his elongated body and hawk nose; Angelica Domröse with her watery look. This became a cinema hit, but in the early 1980s a TV ban came because both protagonists had defected to the West.

Some drawn-out love story in the heart of Berlin, where two neighbors, after being stuck in loveless marriages, fall for each other and want to be happy (again). Certainly not a bad film, and in terms of form it certainly contains surprising discoveries here and there. But the story itself is hardly surprising. A nice insight into daily life in the then GDR (East Germany). Apparently a major box office success in those days, which made 'world stars' of the Pole-born Winfried Glatzeder and Angelica Domröse, until they moved to the west, and then the fun was over and the film was no longer allowed to be shown. Because no matter how friendly and cheerful it all looks in this film, it was and remained a totalitarian prison until the Russians took their hands off it in 1989.
