"Do you think that when a dream feels real enough, it can affect you in the real world? Like, just something so horrible that it can hurt you? Do you think a nightmare could kill you?" Behold Laura and her problem. Laura Hasn't Slept is a short horror film by writer and director Parker Finn, who later became more widely known for writing and directing Smile (2022) and Smile 2 (2024). Two films that entertained me less than this short horror film.

The story, in which Laura's sleep is disturbed by nightmares of a scary man who wants to harm her, is a captivating tale. It's captivating because it's unclear whether the nightmare is just a nightmare or whether nightmare and reality are intertwined. The interest is maintained because there's little elaboration. The narrative is pleasantly short and concise. Caitlin Staseys contributes to the entertainment as Laura. She convincingly conveys her fear and panic to the viewer.

The first part of the film consists mainly of dialogue, through which the viewer is presented with the frightening situation Laura finds herself in. The setting is the reassuring office of a psychiatrist to whom Laura confides her fears. As the story settles in, a shift occurs. The location, the use of color, and the atmosphere change. Suddenly, Laura finds herself in a somber place that seems barely familiar to her. The protective atmosphere of the office literally disintegrates and crumbles before her eyes.

Along with Laura, the viewer experiences a sense of oppression and despair. The next few minutes will reveal whether nightmare and reality are the same entity, and we'll see if and how Laura succeeds in averting the danger. It's quite well-executed and much more enjoyable than the drawn-out version of the short film that made waves under the title Smile.
