In the year 1945, after the Second World War, the artist Tove Jansson feels a renewed artistic and social freedom. Biographical drama about Tove Jansson [Alma Pöysti], who desperately tries to get out of the shadow of her father Viktor [Robert Enckell], a famous sculptor, especially in her own country. In Helsinki she devotes herself completely to 'serious' painting and hedonistic nightlife, where she has an affair with Atos [Shanti Roney] and discovers her bisexuality thanks to director Vivica Bandler [Krista Kosonen]. Vivica discovers that Tove's talent is not in painting, but in drawing and encourages Tove to further develop her stories and illustrations about the Moomins. Well acted and Bergroth manages to convincingly bring the atmosphere of Helsinki in the 1930s to life, but the screenplay by Eeva Putro and Jarno Elonen does not provide much insight into the person behind the artist.

I grew up with the Moomins, and it is really a treat for me to see Tove Jansson's life story like this. What an extremely interesting and loving woman, despite all the setbacks she encountered - the society that did not want to understand her and did not grant her success. A joy to see how she managed to escape that, and therefore a source of hope and inspiration for every graphic artist: stay true to yourself and stay positive, that is really the most important thing of all.
