Sputum plot

"Welcome to the shit hole of evolution"

The story is about a deadly air fungus called the Bloom. The Bloom is invisible, but you can hear the mold all the time. In this world you have the Antiques, the upper class, on the one hand, and the Bakelites, the lower class on the other. The Bakelites have built up a resistance to the Bloom: they produce Sputum in their salivary glands. The Antiques milk the Bakelites for their saliva.

I am really happy with every attempt to make genre films in the Netherlands. And of course you're not going to create a masterpiece right away, because you first have to develop the genre a bit in this country. Hopefully Sputum contributes something to this, but in itself it is not good.

The story is muddled and incoherent and then you can give the film the predicate "experimental". But that is not it. The concept is just too straightforward for that. And that concept is really ridiculous, because people are milked for saliva. Then the film takes itself very seriously and loses itself in a world that we do not know. But the film also doesn't want to bother to take us along or give us some explanation. We have to make do with a few lines of explanation text at the beginning and that's it.

In addition, the environment is mysterious. You see a kind of slaughterhouses, collapsed houses? Do people live on the street? Somewhere it is mentioned that one people lives above and the other below. Well, it's all so confused and you don't really understand why the main character lets himself be milked because apparently he can leave? There were whole bits of dialogue that might as well have been told in Chinese.

In short, it took ten years to make this film, but it is clear that no one will see this film. Actually, I think it's a pity that it's in English, because you should have left a practice film like that in the Netherlands. You are more likely to make a joker of yourself than to conquer the international market with such a product.

OK I'm not as angry as I was with Kill Mode because at least this movie still has some nice pictures and the lighting looks pretty nice too. But I'm ready for that moment when we get out of the SF swamp and a skinny six comes out of the tube.

Intriguing and very original film. I read here and there that the plot is too vague, that it is often completely unclear what is going on and how it all works, but I really liked that. The makers let you swim and at the end you are left with a lot of questions that you will probably never get an answer to.

I wonder if those answers exist. It seems that the makers have no interest in internal logic. I like that. It's also what makes David Lynch so good.

At first I was afraid that too much would be explained. A voice-over (the voice of the main character) tells how the world works, with a vague natural phenomenon that will kill you if you do not take measures in time and two different types of people: those who can withstand that natural phenomenon and those who they can't unless they drink the saliva of the first group. Actually, none of that mattered much to me. The plot drives the film forward, but for me it was mainly about the atmosphere, which is wonderfully alienating and a bit creepy.

It all looks beautiful and I also really liked the sound design. One of the most special films I've seen this year.
