Josep plot

The French government has been completely overwhelmed by the flood of Republicans fleeing Franco's dictatorship. The government sees no other solution than to put these Spaniards in concentration camps where the refugees have no choice but to build their own barracks, to feed themselves with horses they brought from their country. Hundreds die from lack of hygiene and water. In one of these camps, two men, separated by a barbed wire, develop a strong bond of friendship.

Teenager Valentin [David Marsais] visits his dying grandfather Serge [Gérard Hernandez] and discovers a few sketches by the Catalan painter Josep Bartoli and asks Serge how those sketches came into his possession. Serge's story begins in February 1939 in a French concentration camp for people who fled the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime. One of the detainees is Josep Bartoli [Sergie López] who makes many sketches of the appalling conditions and the disrespectful way in which the French gendarmes treat him and his companions. A novice gendarme [Bruno Solo] helps Josep hold on to his human dignity. It's an underplayed, shocking story, but by using an animation style based on Josep's work (and incorporating some of his illustrations), Froment prevents the circumstances from overshadowing the characters and the special personal relationship between the two main characters. A dignified and very respectful tribute to Bartoli with a moving denouement.

Interesting animation film about the black period during the Franco regime, in which countless Spaniards had to flee the country. Not until their worries were over after that, because many ended up in French concentration camps.

A special style of animation. A bit rougher and here and there with color contrasts, often with coarse lines, but appropriate for this kind of film that wants to tell something historical. The style of the animation that also matched the style of the character Josep. It is certainly a fascinating plot in which a bond of friendship develops between a camp guard and a prisoner. There where the camp guard gets remorse for his behavior and harassment that he exerts on the prisoners through social pressure.

A film that, despite the horror, still tries to convey a positive and, above all, hopeful message. A piece of history that was also unknown to me. Well done!

"Ideologies, beliefs, philosophies, regimes...they all die if they don't get to the right man..."

With politics across the borders as a background, in which France does not exactly score favorably, the story of the friendship between a Spanish refugee, draftsman, and a French gendarme with a heart, born in harsh circumstances.

Loved the special structure of the film, the touching story and also the animation as well as the songs and choirs.

Little known about this piece of history and therefore also instructive, isn't it?
