The Mortuary Collection plot

"Every Corpse Has a Story"

It doesn't seem too attractive a job: assistant in a morgue. But for Sam, neither the sinister administrator, Montgomery Dark, nor the shady Victorian premises where his company is based are an impediment. In fact, she loves horror stories. Doesn't he have a few in stock?

Okay.

As a whole it's not bad, but it still didn't give me a wow feeling. I had had my eye on The Mortuary Collection for some time and when I came across a free version on YouTube, I set it up. It was a pretty solid experience for an evening of entertainment.

Brown's role in particular is quite special. I wouldn't expect him in a role like this at all. Fortunately, he knows how to do quite a bit with it. Custer as an actress also does a reasonable job, but doesn't cut it with Brown and a lot of characters in the stories themselves.

Visually, the film has a striking look. It is somewhat reminiscent of Del Toro's films. Imaginative and playful. In terms of decoration, there is enough detail and the cinematography is very successful. Each story has the same style, which means there is a lack of variety, but what is there looks good.

I didn't like the stories themselves. I don't think the first story is even 10 minutes long. The first story hardly has a story, but it does have a number of funny scenes. The second is a bit blander but also more grotesque. Unfortunately, I thought it was a mediocre film where the message is rammed down the viewer's throat in a slightly too childish way.

I thought the third story was by far the best part, it also has a completely different tone. Visually it certainly looked nice, and the acting is very high quality. I liked the last story, which is also an earlier short film by the director, much less. Bland and foolish mostly happen. Not something I got through very easily.

As a whole it flows quite nicely, but I thought it was all too much on the bland side. Sometimes quite silly, but not always in the good way. Visually it looks very good and I really liked the third segment. It's good for a normal passing grade, but no more than that.

Not the best not the worst... Mortuary Collection takes the template of the Creepshow and Tales of the Crypt omnibus films and does so with reasonable success. The frame story with Sam also has a tail at the end. Furthermore, the stories are not original, but they are very well filmed. The chapter "Unprotected" was actually more humor than horror with the student who becomes pregnant herself (3*). Second chapter has a strong Del Toro stamp, especially if you take into account the beautifully filmed ending (3*) and the final slasher-like story connects the narrative with the frame story (3*). All very solid and could perhaps lead to a small revival of these types of films.

A very nice horror anthology with a wonderfully dark funeral director in the frame story who tells four enjoyable stories from his haunted house-like location. Stories that have to do with death and all have a humorous undertone. Very nice.

Four bizarre stories. Stories surrounded by mystery. The combination of horror and humor works great. Much of the stories is wonderfully exaggerated within a morbid context. The eccentric mortician who owns the aptly named Montgomery Dark is played by Clancy Brown. It is never clear whether the character is an innocent old man or a shrewd man with morbid character traits. His sonorous grave voice with which he introduces the stories suggests the latter.

The stories are very nice. The frame story, in which Dark shows a job candidate around his domain and gives the viewer an intriguing glimpse into his macabre working environment, is also the same. The dim house is packed with antique details that, together with Dark's grave voice, create a nice creepy atmosphere. An excellent basis from which the stories come to the viewer.

The stories are all stories with a nice mix of horror and humor. They are stories with a nice point. The Mortuary Collection is a fresh, pleasant and stylistically very successful anthology. Very nice.
