The Dark and the Wicked plot

"She told you not to come"

Somewhere on a remote farm in the countryside, an old man lies on his deathbed. His two children, Louise and Michael, who have been away from home for some time, travel to the family home to spend the last days with their father. The farewell is hard for them and both have to deal with nightmares, moments of unease and a bad feeling. Several times it turns out that something is present in the house that not only plagues them but also their father. Surrounded by darkness, they soon learn that there is more between heaven and earth than what we can see with the naked eye.

Enormously scary indi horror with tight camera work and strong acting. In the film, a sister and a brother go back home to say goodbye to the father who is on his deathbed. Once they arrive, they notice strange things and begin to see things that aren't there. From start to finish, the film manages to create an atmosphere that gave me the shivers and has some perfectly timed scares.

Sparse in terms of plot and if you expect a conclusive explanation for all the scary situations you will be disappointed, but apart from that this is a wonderfully dark and mercilessly gloomy horror film. Great cast too and very atmospherically portrayed by director Bryan Bertino, who until now (with the exception of his reasonable debut The Strangers) had a rather changeable track record. In any case, he surpasses himself with this quietly told but substantively creepy work.

Interesting.

Weird movie, but sometimes nice. This is also my second Bertino. It is certainly a separate director, but I am not a very big fan so far. I do appreciate his attempts to put something unique on the screen, but I think it could be better.

The advantage of this film is that it all feels human. Bertino tries to dig into everyone and get the look of the movie as realistic as possible. That works quite well, although the pace can sometimes get a kick. It tends to get a bit too boring at times unfortunately.

But in terms of atmosphere it is often good. Especially in the second part when the film gets some more exciting scenes it works quite well. Quite creepy here and there, but Bertino doesn't manage to get it really ultimate creepy. The build-up is a bit too tame for that and the pay-off is too substandard, but the atmosphere for a creepy film is certainly there.

Acting is very strong, the characters feel human at all times. They are the standard appearances, but in an environment that feels "real" and the film knows how to use that to its advantage. Sometimes the characters try a little too hard to be scary, but otherwise there is little to complain about.

It's a pity that this movie never really gets under your skin or gets really creepy, because this could have been a very scary movie. The attributes are there, but the pay-off just isn't. This film never gets very exciting, but it does look atmospheric and human. Unfortunately, that's where it pretty much ends for me.

A Scary and Heartbreaking Film

Our intro is very warm and cozy with female character, and she does a proper hard days work on her property. We appear to have some happenings early off, and I'm unsure if it's a regular occurrence or something entirely different.

We now have more main characters on the property, and the odd happenings are still occurring. Things have gotten ugly really fast, and we've had a truly terrible tragedy happen. Stranger and stranger, things are just getting worse, or maybe we're seeing what was always there and not talked about.

Such a simple and humble life to begin, and we have such a terribly ominous aura now being felt stronger with each day. I knew when I saw that Marin Ireland is in this film that we'd be in for an emotional ride, and she isn't disappointing.

It's so hard to get your footing and slow your heart with all the terror that is being unleashed, and it appears to be escalating.
