Rather dull political satire in which the American electoral system is defeated and the finger is pointed at the flood gates between the political and economic world. That sounds melancholy, but Irresistible emphatically seeks out the lighthearted paths. However, it does so without much humor or panache, and at the same time the argument is too well-behaved to be sharp enough. Although Steve Carell and Chris Cooper perform well, it is mainly the shaky screenplay that ensures that the film - despite its potential - never really gets off the ground. Adam McKay, where are you?

Nice film about a political strategist who tries to get a democratic mayor in a mainly republican village. A political comedy where the humor is sometimes a bit easy and as a whole it also lacks some sharpness. It is entertaining with a nice ending and the community is also well portrayed.

Spin doctor Gary Zimmer [Steve Carell] is looking to make amends for the Democrats' unfortunate loss during the 2016 American Presidential elections. He comes to the conclusion that the Democrats need to win back the rural community, so when he sees a video in which ex-Marine Colonel Jack Hastings [Chris Cooper] admonishes the city council in his hometown of Deerlaken, Michigan, he seizes his opportunity. Jack “looks like a Republican, but speaks like a Democrat,” so Gary travels to Michigan to persuade Jack to join the mayoral race. But Gary has to run the campaign from Deerlaken and that is not Washington. In addition, Gary's arch-rival Faith Brewster [Rose Byrne] joins the campaign of the incumbent mayor [Brent Sexton]. Comedian and host Jon Stewart wrote and directed this mild satire, but has little original to say. The final twist is nice and it can also rely on an excellent cast, with Cooper as the standout.
