Aretha Franklin has reportedly designated Jennifer Hudson as the actress, who should play her if a film about her career is ever made. After seeing this movie I understand why. The story of AF's life is quite formulaic, but the music is enchanting. The experience that Hudson puts in her interpretations of the Franklin songs often gave me goosebumps. There is of course only one “Queen of Soul”, but Jennifer Hudson comes pretty close in this film. Beautiful.

Biography of the first 30 years of Aretha Franklin's eventful life ends with the recording of her live recorded gospel album 'Amazing Grace' in 1972. Reveals Aretha's traumatizing childhood in 20 minutes and then neatly goes through the most important moments in the life of The Queen of Soul, several times with the help of a one-way video call (“Hello? What? Oh no!” and then you can probably guess who died again) without also giving any insight into Aretha's true motivations. Hudson can sing quite well, but she doesn't sound or resemble Aretha Franklin at all, so that when you interpret the big hits, you almost forget that Hudson is trying to imitate Aretha. Skip this and put on any Aretha album.

Respect is the title but also what I have for this film. Man, what a singer Aretha Franklin is. Did know a few hits, who didn't by the way, but learned a bit more about this miracle through this film. Soul, funk, gospel. This is what typifies this film. If you don't like that, don't start. But if you can relate to that, definitely check this one out. The 2.5 hours had passed in no time.

And also respect for Jennifer Hudson. Wonderful performance to put down this Queen of soul. Whether it corresponds with reality or not, it seems believable to me. Fans may be more critical, but for me this was a great movie experience. All the way with the typical gospel music and church celebrations where the pastor delivers a sermon and the visitors shout halelua. Also hats off to Forest Whitaker, age has no effect on this actor that I got to know at the time in Bloodsport from 1988. This man here perhaps delivers the achievement of his career. And not wrongly intended, but this film exudes the black culture and outlook on life, which only makes me happy. Music is a way of expressing yourself and forgetting about problems and that is what Aretha is clearly conveying here. In addition, the fight against black oppression is also given with, among other things. Martin Luther King Junior as an additional role, also showing the real images of his funeral.

This movie gets a 4.5 from me. Still one of my toppers and a good start for 2022.
