A fierce, penetrating documentary. I sympathized with the family and I could empathize with them. Their desperation, their fear, their pain and their struggle. A very nasty and sad situation, and terrible that they have to flee their country because of love, because they can be severely punished there. Freedom is so important. The son is clearly very smart and seems to sense a lot. Fun to watch him grow up. I think it's a very good, strong documentary with a harrowing story. It captivated me from start to finish. 4*

In 2012, Iranians Leila and Sahand fled to Turkey with their son Mani. English teacher Leila was married to a man who never had sex with her and couldn't or wouldn't give her children. Leila's divorce petition was rejected, moreover, she started an affair with colleague Sahand from whom she got pregnant. Although she was able to keep her husband on the line for a long time, the fear and chance of her extramarital affair (punishable with stoning) being discovered was too great. The asylum procedure is complicated by the large influx of refugees from Syria. We follow Leila, Sahand and Mani (who only discovers that Sahand is his father upon arrival in Turkey) during the years they wait for an official status and witness the impact it has on their lives. Some moments are clearly (re)staged, but the emotions are undeniably sincere.
