The Last Whalers of São Miguel plot
“Oh man! Admire the whale and set an example for yourself” says Herman Melville in Moby Dick. The world famous writer Melville once signed up to New Bedford USA to go whaling. Inspired after reading Moby Dick, filmmaker Annette van Trigt goes to the Azores. On one of the 9 islands, São Miguel, nothing reminds of the cruel hunt for sperm whales. Much to the chagrin of the last two living whalers who have seen all their cultural heritage lost 'due to bad island governance'. Against this faded background, the hunters sketch how, driven by poverty, they waged the life-threatening battles at sea, which brought unconditional comradeship.
