No.

New book, new movie. I wonder if Nakata 20 years ago could have imagined that he would still be stuck with this series today. Although it is not the case that he has slavishly made the same horror film for 20 years. He should have just skipped this reboot (or whatever).

It's called a horror film, but it's actually more of a mystery/drama, with some classic Ringu scenes incorporated here and there. They haven't been exciting for a long time, Nakata hardly even seems to put any effort into making them exciting. It has become a kind of necessary evil, he seems more interested in the story he wants to present here.

Unfortunately, that is not very interesting. Maybe also because I never really followed the Ringu lore. I have seen most of the films, but how everything hangs together doesn't interest me enough to find out. So I probably missed some interesting (?) references here and there.

On the other hand, this film is fairly self-contained and I would not be surprised if it also occasionally goes against established lore. Whatever it may be, as a standalone film this is not really bad or disastrous, but anyone expecting an exciting horror will be disappointed, and it is not great cinema either. So a simple snack.

2.5*

Director Hideo Nakata returned to his well-known series after 14 years with another new part. I found his American adventure quite entertaining, but with Sadako he delivers one of the worst parts in the series. Once again, a lot of time is taken to develop a completely uninteresting event, where the same elements are used over and over again. Another bewitched child, another tired curse that comes to stir things up, another number of unsuspecting and innocent main characters without any charisma and another ridiculous finale to end things with a so-called "clap on the cake". It is extremely tiring to watch these kinds of stupid mysteries with fascination every time, because highlights from previous series parts are always included to color the event. Luckily I only have one more part to go and then I can put it behind me for a while.
