Umbilical World plot

Umbilical World is David Firth's retrospective collection of 13 years of animated madness fused into one continuous nightmarish whole. Featuring both new material and a slew of remastered classics, from Spoilsbury Toast Boy to Health Reminder. The well-known internet sensation 'Salad Fingers', a thin, green, insane creature living in a desolate world, also plays a role in the film.

As a fan of Firth's work, this film is a dream come true. I was already familiar with most of the shorts, but there is still quite a bit of new material and the segments are ingeniously interwoven by means of the most crazy transitions. Furthermore, just 79 minutes of wonderfully bizarre, freaky and sometimes very funny animation, which in terms of atmosphere is perhaps most reminiscent of Lynch.

The animation is not always what you would call 'beautiful', but the film brings such a flood of weird ideas that it didn't bother me at all. The soundtrack is of course strong, with a lot of dreamy ambient that sometimes puts all the weirdness in an almost poetic light. It's just a bit of a shame that the best shorts are right at the beginning of the film. Sock 5 and that clip of Flying Lotus are my favorites.
