Looks nice.

Murai can try his hand at a feature as far as I'm concerned.

This is above all a nice musical short film.

Story itself meh, but if you appreciate Gambino's music then this is not to be missed of course.

Poor.

Not really familiar with Glover, it is easy to notice that this is some kind of project that is completely built around him, and also his music. It's a shame that not much time seems to have been put into it, it's just Glover doing his thing in front of the camera.

However, things started off nicely with that animation. Also the best of the entire film. The rest of the story is never really interesting, the acting is very bland and the music adds very little. Or you really had to be a fan of the man.

I also find the 4:3 incomprehensible. It's such an ugly relationship, if there doesn't really seem to be a function for it then it mainly seems like an interesting thing to do. But I had that with the entire film. Only the location adds a bit of atmosphere, otherwise this is a somewhat dead film that only feels more pointless due to the short playing time.

1.5*

A somewhat strange mixture of animation, musical, fairy tale and social realism. On a fictional Caribbean island, the islanders dream of freedom and prosperity like in the United States. Island singer Deni Maroon (Donald Glover) offers a small window into that new world with his protest songs, but his announced music festival is a sore spot for the local authorities. The dictatorial drug lord Red Cargo (Nonso Anonzie) only wants him to make propaganda for him. Does Deni choose a safe existence with his love Kovi Novia (Rihanna), or does the call for freedom prove to be stronger than the imposed censorship?! It's all a bit predictable and 'Guava Island' (2019) progresses a little too slowly for a production of only 55 minutes. Still some strong music numbers and a nice summer atmosphere. The biggest asset is Donald Glover as an immensely charismatic performer with a swinging sense of song and dance. His one-two punches with Rihanna are beyond adorable. Although in the end I still have the feeling that some things might have been done better with a full playing time.
