My first movie since the lockdown, and these opening credits are a nice opener. The whistlers is made with a lot of fun, is full of movie references and also knows how to come up with something fresh (without being overly fussy). The basic principle that you only need a 'girl and a gun' is further embellished by Porumboiu with a shitload of opera music and various special locations, including of course the dazzling, bombastic finale. In the meantime, the problem of corruption in Romania also plays a role. Nice film.

This Romanian film certainly made me feel better.

We follow an older agent Cristi who arrives in the Canary Islands and where he meets a teacher and a young woman; who later has to introduce herself as a Femme Fatale and whom he met in a flashback. At least, she has sought him out and only now does it become clear for what... but also more importantly: how.

The film often travels between the gray streets of Bucharest and the sunny snapshots on Tenrife. In Bucharest, it’s about a suspected drug dealer with a price on his head, and Cristi and Gilda prepare for a mission to lead him up the garden path. On Tenrife, they learn the tricks of how to do that best; namely, communicate by whistling at each other from a distance. So that the residents and the authorities think they are just birds.

The film does have a bit of all the familiar elements. A Neo-Noir atmosphere, even a bit of the style of old spy films, but also a high arthouse content. Certainly no lack of creativity. There is even room for a pretty well shot action scene... and where? In a film studio, of which there are many in Romania and where Hollywood sometimes goes to save a lot of money.

The ending with that light show in Singapore; accompanied by the music of Strauss and Can Can was a phenomenal work of art and actually also a bit of an ode to love.

It has made The Whistlers a film where the fun really bursts from. What is sometimes less is that it is sometimes a bit slow and that there is quite a lot of messing with time. But that is only a small percentage. I enjoyed it very much.

A colorful, stylish neo-noir full of double meanings. The film progresses slowly with a lot of attention for beautiful locations and of course for femme fatale Catrinel Marlon who can also be seen naked. Original, although very far-fetched, is the whistling language that is used here in the story. The film sometimes loses its attention due to the slow pace and unnecessary additions, but somehow manages to remain interesting until the end that serves a true pleasure for the viewer with the light show in Singapore. An ingenious contemporary film noir with a sense of realism and dark humor. 6.5/10
