Like so many amateur filmmakers who hope for a director's career in Hollywood: made out of love for film, but without the money or experience to do anything special with the material. The only difference is that this makeshift passion work was made by Quentin Tarantino. And then it is very nice to see how some well-known elements - such as his long drawn-out dialogues and the references to film and music history - already return in a rudimentary form. I also chuckled at the idea that 'My Best Friend's Birthday' (1987) resembles dozens of Tarantino tributes, with which young people around the world tried to capture some of the hipness and brilliance of the master himself. His talent also did not come out of the blue and he had to start somewhere to get where he is now. A nice thought in the run-up to 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' (2019) as his latest hyper-stylized film with a star cast.

It remains interesting to see the early work of directors who were later allowed to tackle larger productions, but they are often ultra-cheap shoddy works. This debut film by director Quentin Tarantino contains an unfinished whole with a lot of comic notes, which have been melted together into a (sort of) coherent project. Although the dialogues are often funny and effective (your ass is grass, and I am the lawnmower) it nevertheless remains difficult to repeatedly keep your attention on the rather meaningless images. The acting is extremely substandard and as a whole it was barely understandable for me, but with a short running time of only 37 minutes it was manageable for once.
