Cusack has indeed not aged very nicely. And with his long hair and dark clothes, he reminds me a bit of Michael Madsen. What strikes me even more is that Emile Hirsch bears a strong resemblance to Jack Black. A dark western, both literally and in theme as dark as the night. No exaggerated action or heroic deeds, just realistic and sober. Themes such as religion, greed and murder are mentioned. The whorehouse is literally right across from the church. Nice how the priest at the end literally wants to send the sinners to hell.

A small, tight-knit community with no room for booze and its associated sins must deal with the manipulative Dutch Albert [John Cusack] and his men who soon call the shots. Patrick Tate [Emile Hirsch] is a law-abiding man who initially takes advantage of this and keeps aloof from the conflict Dutch causes, until the safety of his own family is at stake. Old-fashioned western (in the good sense of the word) with a beautiful villain role by Cusack and an exciting climax. Piers McGrail's beautiful and appropriately moody camera work earned him an IFTA award.

According to the wikipedia story, this is then a 'Revisionist Western' - one that gives a more realistic picture of the conquest of the, ahem, 'wild' west from the natives. With a lot of booze, a lot of seamy side, a lot of violence and misery, a lot of deaths, and a short and largely hopeless life.

In that respect, the film has succeeded quite well, and visually it all comes out fine. Beautiful gray images of a hopeless autumn, against the beautifully coloring leaves - you almost hear the DOP calling 'conditions' when you see the shot. Unfortunately, the timing of the story is a bit difficult, the actors are a bit on the lackluster side, the bad guys a bit too sinister, and the good guys too ambiguous - just like in real life, perhaps, but it doesn't really make for an exciting or entertaining film. There is just that something missing, that spark, or even the recognisability or the interest in how it ends with the main characters, although they never become very interesting either.

But still, the soundtrack is very nice, and a film with Déborah François in it always has that little bit extra.
