The Penalty plot

An investigation into the human toll of the death penalty in America. The filmmakers tell the story of three people affected by the American death penalty system: a wrongly convicted man who spent 15 years on death row, a lawyer fighting the sloppy and increasingly inhumane executions, and a mother fighting the death sentence for her daughter's murderer.

This documentary will undoubtedly be quite offensive to a large group of conservative people, especially in the United States, although since the Trump culture has spread to Europe, it will undoubtedly also cause a lot of commotion in households here. But in the Netherlands we almost all think the same about the fact that the legal system in the US is quite rattled and the death penalty is outdated.

The Penalty itself is a fairly sober documentary without frills, something you don't see very often on Netflix. The film follows three people who each have their own way of dealing with the American justice system, specifically the death penalty/death row. They are sincere people where one story is more interesting to follow than the other. The lawyer who fights against the death penalty is not very interesting, but in the bigger picture of how experimental the state of Ohio is with the death penalty, it is poignant. In addition, a man is also followed who tries to pick up his life after a wrongful conviction. This was a bit sluggish. It is a pity that they no longer discuss the interrogation techniques and forced confessions here. The story of the woman who first pleads for the death penalty, but then has to deal with the ridiculous American justice system is the most interesting. This really feels like a rollercoaster and also indicates that it is all a ridiculous political game. The relatives who at one point are tired of years of visiting the courtroom and prefer to accept the life sentence, but are opposed by a prosecutor who demands the death penalty because it is part of her election campaign. Your toes really start to curl with such a stubborn tuthola.

Nowhere special. But it does provide a special insight with three different perspectives on an outdated legal system.

Not the best documentary about the horrible death penalty. How many people have already been wrongly sentenced to death for DNA, and if they were colored it was even easier. Love coming to the US, but seems awful to live there.....
