De Belofte van Pisa plot
Sam, an energetic Moroccan boy, is admitted to the prestigious Music Lyceum in Amsterdam South. At the Pisa ice cream parlor, he solemnly promises his older brother Sol that he will not drop out and will pass his final exams from the elite music school. Sol, in turn, promises to help Sam with all his schoolwork and music rehearsals. But then Sol is arrested for a robbery and ends up behind bars for years. While his brother is imprisoned, Sam must and will fulfill the promise of Pisa on his own strength.

De Belofte van Pisa is a Dutch film with a clear goal, and that is to be better than the average muck that comes out from our own soil these days. I can only praise the director's passion, it cannot be called good, but it can be called differently. That alone is worth a small compliment.
But this film still struggles with the problem that so many other NL films struggle with; the acting. El-Hamus and Wageningen are the only refreshing factors in this film, otherwise there are a lot of useless crew members walking around. Little sense of good dialogue and a forced way of acting ruin the film early on. It should be clear why a large part of the crew did not break through abroad.
The Pledge of Pisa is also a classic example of a movie that wants to be hip but is directed by someone who is simply not up to date. The approach and content are really too old-fashioned for words. The story has no surprises and the colors and beautiful mood settings suddenly make an uncomfortable impression.
However, I have to praise the visual level of the film. This film will not have had a lot of budget, but they clearly did their best on the cinematographic aspect of the film. Neat interpretation and some warm scenes. Too bad the other elements alone can't support this.
In the meantime, quite a few nice Dutch films have been made, to which De Belofte van Pisa would very much like to belong, but cannot. It is special at times, but otherwise it just lacks that freshness and quality that is needed to take this kind of film to a higher level. Too safe cinema with some highlights, but overall a restrained film.

Nowadays I have to yawn a bit with such an inflated culture clash as a starting point, but the film remains entertaining and dynamic. Great role by El-Hamus.

Mediocre film about a boy with musical talents whose criminal brother ends up in prison. The main character and the culture he finds himself in come out well, but the story lacks focus. Not everything is well worked out and there are also some time jumps that are not always clear. Shahine El-Hamus and Olivia Lonsdale are well cast together.
