After a car accident in which her mother dies, 17-year-old Ida moves in with her hitherto unknown aunt and her aunt's grown sons. The house is filled with physical tenderness and love, but outdoors the family leads a violent and criminal life as blackmailers. As Ida begins to get used to her new life, she begins to realize why her mother may have kept her away, but there is something powerful about the way her cousins approach life. When an unforeseen murder strains the family and their loyalty to each other more than ever, violence becomes a part of home life alongside love. Ida is confronted with the same question her mother asked her. How far would you go for your family?

Sidse Babett Knudsen is of course a pleasure to watch, but she can't save this film in the role of a kind of Danish "Ma Baker". Nor can protagonist Sandra Guldberg Kampp, who is doing a good job in herself.
The angle of having the story told by a diffuse young girl, who ends up in a turbulent environment after the death of her mother, is nice in itself, but ultimately results in a rather flat psychodrama with few highs or lows. I have the feeling that this is a bit of a missed opportunity.

Somber, sober Danish crime drama, that is somewhat reminiscent of the earlier (and Australian) Animal Kingdom. In terms of plot, the film does not amount to much and we have all seen it before and better, but the atmosphere setting is top, the characters are intriguing and the entire cast is strongly acted. Sidse Babett Knudsen may be getting older; she is still very good. And beautiful.
