Syrupy, completely predictable story of the moody, bitter Alice [Gemma Arterton] who is saddled with Frank [Lucas Bond], a boy who has fled the bombings in London during WWII. His father is a pilot and his mother works for the British government and cannot leave London. Naturally, she can't stand the kid at first, but the well-worn formula demands that that change.

Anyone who is somewhat familiar with the formula will see the 'twists' coming long in advance and will often be bored to death, despite the presence of veteran Tom Courtenay as headmaster and the performance of the talented Dixie Egerickx as Frank's classmate Edie. Director/screenwriter Jessica Swale tries to give corny themes a modern twist - Alice is a lesbian and her great love was a black woman - but it is in vain. However, the East Sussex Tourist Office will be pleased with the many beautiful pictures by Laurie Rose and composer Volker Bertelmann delivers a fitting score.

The war plays a role in the background. It is the setting for which a dramatic story unfolds. A film with predictable elements does not have to be boring, but this film fails to do that. It won't be exciting. Dixie Egerickx is a bright spot.

This drama was a pleasant surprise. The cast did well and the interaction between the two leads was also good.

The story wasn't boring either. The film takes place during the war, but it is only a very small part.

Thought it was a great movie.
