This film was a very nice surprise. From beginning to end I was glued to the screen: the film starts off intriguingly with bizarre behavior by a police officer at his mother's funeral and almost every scene afterward has a similar impact. Because of that beginning, it is immediately clear that something is wrong with the man and what first appears to be normal stress later appears to be PTSD due to a work accident (for which he has been awarded) as a source (with the death of his mother as a catalyst for an 'emotional breakdown'), although the film does not make this explicit. Cummings sometimes seems to go over the top in terms of acting, but with PTSD such behavior may still be realistic. The film touched me deeply because the film is simultaneously hilariously comic and deeply sad, which makes the film a top drama à la American Beauty (1999) - MovieMeter. nl where, just like that classic, this film is also a document of how ordinary Americans sometimes can no longer cope with life and its usual setbacks.

I experienced the film as an intense emotional rollercoaster and the only reason I don't give it five stars is that there are a few weaker and/or less interesting/intense scenes (such as in the classroom and with his sister) and the story is its whole is not very special. However, the scenes are hilarious/heartbreaking and it's one of the most impressive films I've seen in a while.

P.S. The description of the film on MM does not match how I interpreted the film. I have not seen a narcissistic man, but rather a man who wants the best for everyone (but has no control over his life at all). I don't recognize the love letter either...

Jim Arnaud [Jim Cummings] is a police officer in a small Texas town whose life is in shambles. After the death of his mother, he ignores the advice to seek psychological help, as well as the order not to show up for work and to take time to process everything. Cummings wrote the screenplay and music, directed and played the lead role, but can't decide how seriously we should take his character. Jim's infrequent crying fits bring neither smiles nor tears, and that's not the only reason why he's such an irritating character. Either way, Cummings has grossly overestimated all the talent he tapped for this nasty movie.

Jim means well, but he talks before he thinks and cannot correctly assess the events, which causes him to get into trouble, and this dawns on him so that he panics and makes matters worse. If there are additional family problems - he must be to some extent to blame - he will be completely devastated.

I actually looked with admiration at Jim Cummings for accomplishing all this (the funeral speech, the dispute with his work environment...)

Not exactly crazy about this kind of humor, although there is also pathos involved, if only because of the helplessness of this man.
